DPSM Produces Its First PhD in Health Sciences by Research Graduates

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) took pride of the newest addition to its roster of graduates. Asst. Prof. Liza T. Billones, a faculty member of the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics (DPSM), made history as the first DPSM faculty member to finish the degree in Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences by Research during the recent 115th Commencement Exercises of the University of the Philippines  Manila on July 26, 2024 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). Dr. Alex C. Gonzaga (also a DPSM faculty member) was her program adviser. Dr. Billones specializes in Statistics with research interests in computational statistics and data analysis. Her dissertation is entitled “Data Analytics-Guided Ligand-Based Discovery of Potential Next Generation COX-2 Acting Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): Applying Statistical and Machine Learning Techniques with Wavelet Transform in Drug Discovery.”

Another graduate is Dr.  Hernan G. Pantolla. His research is entitled “Econometric Modeling of the Vulnerability to Some Direct and Indirect Effects of Climate Change on Human Health: Evidence from Selected Areas in Mindanao, Philippines.” Dr. Gonzaga was also his program adviser.

The PhD in Health Sciences by Research program is the first of its kind in UP and in the country. It aims to put together various areas of specialization to discover new insights for a more holistic approach to health problems/concerns. Accordingly, the graduates of the program are expected to lead the country’s efforts in discovery, research, innovation, and scientific advancement who will address the health issues of developing countries, form part of the academe, and produce future scientists as well.

Congratulations to our first set of PhD graduates!
