As one of its professional development extension initiatives, faculty members of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Unit (CBU) partnered with K-12 science teachers of Makati Hope Christian School to refresh and strengthen subject knowledge. It also aims to build the skills of high school science teachers teaching in junior high school both in the conceptual and practical laboratory aspects of the chemistry topics taught. Rather than focusing purely on abstract theory, faculty mentors taught high school teachers on real-world experimentation. Initiated last November 28, 2025, the CBU is planning to have its 2nd faculty training in November 2026.
Professors guide educators on how to structure inquiry-based lessons, trade static textbook problems for real data sets, and adapt lab equipment for better teaching-learning experience. This bridge between higher education and secondary classrooms ensures that high school science curricula reflect current scientific consensus rather than decade-old standards. Ultimately, this university-led training initiative helps create a far-reaching multiplier effect across the STEM pipeline. By equipping educators with current knowledge, modern pedagogy, and ongoing academic mentorship, UP Manila is helping demystify STEM pathways early. High school students gain a realistic understanding of what modern scientists actually do, inspiring a diverse new generation of inquisitive thinkers ready to pursue higher education and technical careers.
